This article addresses the humanities scholar who fears that are increasingly seen as irrelevant and unnecessary. It offers a defence of which resists tired trope science mechanical dehumanising, instead recognises sciences equal incommensurable value. The interpret human artefacts using skills: looking, listening, speaking, reading, writing. They deal with untidy, non-abstractable state being human. Where distil, purify universalise, enrich particularise. seek illuminating complication rather than science’s beautiful simplicity. an ongoing lesson in otherness, infinite mystery irreducibility every life. remind us messy humanity behind metric-driven, quasi-rationalistic, algorithmic world conjured up language managerialism techno-consumerism. show lives, all their brevity, confusion, pain joy, meaningful.
